Drawing hair is not only about the texture – as many of you would think. You can make your hair drawing look 10x better if you know how to make the base. The composition is essential for your final result. If you are a beginner then focus on that first to learn how to draw hair easy and fast.

1. Draw shapes that will help you define the hairline. On the video you can see how to compose the shapes in a way that wil help you get the good hairline. It is a good way to begin because later you will do it automatically. If you draw digitally than don’t forget to use seperate layers.

For this tutorial I used Procreate App on iPad Pro 12.9 inch from 2017. I will let you know throughtout the video and this blog post what brush sets i was using and where you can get them.

2. Delete the base for hairline Now you don’t need the hairline base anymore. Delete the base layer and let the hairline layer help you in the next steps. You can set the opacity of this layer to 10-30%.

3. Draw the base for your hair drawing Create a new layer and draw hair with around the head. It should not be deatailed because we focus on composition now. Give it some dynamics by drawing with relaxed hand and giving every stroke a logical direction. You can exeggarate to make your hair draw more interesting and defined.

4. Create the final hair lineart on a seperate layer The base you created in step 3 will now help you keep the proportion and composition. Try to first draw the biggest strokes, and later on add the details.

5. Repeat with different bases and lineart The best way to learn this technique and how to draw hair easy and fast is to practice. Try to draw different hair types with the same base. On the example below I used my “Rough Hair” brush from the Cartoon-ish Make Up Brush Set. It was incresibly easy to draw this hair on this base, because I did not have to hesitate about the directions of the hair cowlicks.

You should also create different bases for the same hair structure to improve even faster. See the examples below to see how I created the base and lineart for long wavy hair and short straight hair. I also recomment to watch the video (scroll to the beginning of the post) to see the full process. It is a good thing to do because you memorize and understand it better when watching a video.

Note: Short hair goeas different direction (most common) than medium or long hair. Watch the video from 10:02 to see explanation with guiding lines. Nothing ruins a well drawn cartoon head like ugly drawn hair. Pretty much, what you want to avoid, is the spaghetti hair effect. You don't want your hair drawing to look like you're just putting down a bunch of lines from the top of the head.  It really doesn't look good at all.

These examples do follow some of what I'm going to talking about in this lesson. At this point though, if you want to start drawing hair, you shouldn't get too intimidated.  Just start drawing what you think looks good.  You can apply the info from this lesson if you want to finesse your drawings:

This is something I learned Figure Drawing and it helps when drawing cartoons a lot.  What you're going to be doing is an extension of  what we learned in Lvl 0 Designing Simple Cartoon Characters with Flat Shapes.

You're going to design your character's hair using flat shapes until you come up with something that seems right to you. This includes defining where the hair line is.

How To Draw Beautiful Hair.

Well, because when we look at a person in real life, we don't see every individual hair strand.  What we see is a mass of hair that creates a certain shape.  We recognize it as lot's of hair and we notice it's texture but our first impression is it's shape.

When drawing cartoons, we simplify this even more and imply hair with hair shapes.  They can be simple or complex, depending on the style of cartoon.

Believe it or not, when I'm life drawing a person's hair, I begin by simplifying the hair into a flat shape and defining the hair line so I can get a handle of what I'm going to draw.

Instead of drawing every single strand of hair, it's helpful to separate hair into clumps.  Similar to ribbons.  They can look flat, thick or pointy. Whatever works you need them to be.

In order to put them on the head, you pay attention to the hair's origin point.  This is one reason you define the hair line.  It's a point of origin:

Once you find these origin point you create ribbon shapes within the hair shape you've established.  You're essentially defining the way the hair flows.  You can make this simple or complex, it's up to you:

Ways To Draw Manga Hair

A good rule of thumb is, "less is more." If you can get away with one highlight, you're good.  If you need more than one, then add another.  If you find you need even more, you're in danger of over doing it.Hair is a very complex subject to draw, because it's like a substance that can take many shapes and forms. Because of this, manga artists have developed a special method of simplifying hair. In manga or anime, you draw hair as a mass or a cloth. This way it can be drawn quickly, with exaggerated shading that conceals the lack of detail.

In this tutorial, I will show you how to draw various manga hairstyles: straight hair, wavy hair, pigtails, and short hair. I will also explain the method behind it, so that you can draw your own anime hairstyles from scratch. Before you start, you may want to take a look at our previous tutorials on How to Draw Anime:

Let's take a look at the method behind drawing anime hair first. Once you understand it, you'll be able to create your own anime hairstyles with no help!

Hair doesn't lie flat on the skull. Always start by defining some distance right above the head, drawing a simple helmet like this:

Next, sketch a simple outline of the hairstyle. How long is it? What is its general shape? This will help you see the effect of the hair on the composition before actually drawing it.

Hair needs to reveal the face in some way. Draw the outline of the bangs, or move the hair to the sides.

Draw the "helmet" to mark the distance from the head. Straight hair usually is not very voluminous, so you don't have to add a lot of distance.

Draw the basic shape of the hairstyle. Straight hair goes smoothly down. The only curve appears where the hair falls on the shoulders.

"Close" the shape of the strands by drawing a line from the tip of one rhythm line to just below the tip of the other.

The guide lines are done, so let's get to the main drawing now! Copy the rhythm lines along the strands to make them more detailed.

It's done! Of course, there are many manga styles, and not all of them require the same level of detail. Feel free to modify this method to achieve the style you prefer. There are a lot of shortcuts you can use to simplify this style even more!

Although a wavy hairstyle may look quite voluminous at first, it doesn't add a lot of distance to the top (of course, feel free to modify it for an exaggerated effect!).

Once you have the main, clear strands, add some parts of them here and there. This will create a nice, overlapping look.

Be careful when drawing these lines inside the wavy strands, though—they may look too heavy with long lines inside. Instead, try to pick your pen/pencil up from time to time to make the lines less continuous.

All done! Of course, you may want to simplify some steps. A wavy hairstyle can be successfully drawn with very few lines, if you shade it properly.

That would be the end of the guide lines! Time for the final lines now. Outline the main part of the hair.

Short hair can be very voluminous on top, as it's not pulled down by its own weight. Feel free to add a lot of distance here!
